NAME: Etsuya Nishi
CODE NAME: Rebound
ALIGNMENT: Student
TITLE: N/A
AGE: 17
GENDER: Male
QUIRK NAME: LOCO-MOTION
QUIRK CLASSIFICATION: EMITTER
QUIRK DESCRIPTION:
Allows Nishi to manipulate the positional and rotational momentum of objects, people and himself through his breathing. If this quirk is used on something other than himself, he must touch it upon activation.
By holding his breath, he is able to temporarily halt all momentum on himself or a target. This puts a strain on his lungs equal to the amount of momentum being halted. When he exhales, he may choose which direction the momentum is unleashed. This ability doesn’t change the amount of force, only the direction it is applied, so if the target is stationary at the time of activation it has no effect upon release.
He can also transfer held momentum from one source to another. (Himself to someone else, someone else to an object, etc.)
QUIRK POWER LIMIT:
Since his quirk is tied to his breathing, passing out from over-exertion is always a concern. This is compounded by all the other ways a fight or flight situation tests your endurance. When quirk uses are properly paced out (around 1 use every 30 seconds), he can go without a break for 20 minutes. If he is forced to use his quirk more than 2 times in quick succession, he’ll need to take around a 1 minute break before using his quirk again.
The maximum force he can manipulate is around 65 mph. Anything higher than that and his lungs carry the risk of rupturing. If he does this in more than 2 times in a row, he'll be so out of breath, even walking would be tough; catching his breath would take at least five minutes.
The amount of time he can hold his quirk depends on the force that was halted. A small force (a thrown baseball) he could hold for a bit over a minute, a moderate force (a person falling from 2 stories high) for 45 seconds, and large force (a car on the freeway) for only about 5 seconds. Of course, if he's winded the duration will be significantly shorter.
His oxygen mask allows him to instantly recover from being out of breath once, before it's depleted.
QUIRK TECHNICAL LIMIT:
Size matters. The momentum generated from a simple sprint won’t be enough to flip a truck, for example.
If he can’t breathe, he can’t quirk, so underwater and space is a no-go. Also choking. Choking is bad.
Only solids are really effective with his quirk, since only the portion of liquids and gases that are physically touching him would be affected, so just his body’s surface area; that’s not much to work with.
QUIRK BARRIER (Students ONLY):
Though his quirk is extremely versatile, he has only mastered using it on himself, thanks to his obsession with “parkour” a sport where you run and climb among the rooftops. He thinks the other ways he can use his quirk aren’t as useful as the creative movement his power allows. This is clearly false, but he is sadly oblivious to it. For now.
QUIRK FACTOR:
Power 2
Finesse 2
Stamina 1
SUPER MOVE: VICIOUS VELOCITY > Instead of exhaling, Nishi lets out a vicious shout that expels all the air in his lungs at once. This increases the force he has stored exponentially, but he’ll have to take a good long break before getting back to the action.
COSTUME: REFILL. His costume is equipped with a small capacity oxygen mask. It is one use only and allows him to instantly recover from being out of breath.
EXPERTISE: PARKOUR. Nishi prides himself on being able to get from point A to point B no matter what is in his way.
FLAW:
He’s rather self-conscious and has issues with being confident. Due to Japan’s orderly nature, people often view his antics and regard him as a hooligan. So to avoid embarrassment, he usually goes on night runs to avoid being noticed. Though some may think it selfish, he only wants to be a hero for the freedom it would allow him. If he helped people every now and then, maybe people wouldn’t look down on him for once.
Because of his negative self-image, he is easily demoralized. If someone were to bombard him with enough put-downs, he might even be pushed to the point of giving up a conflict entirely.
APPEARANCE:
Standing at 5’9 Nishi sports a fit but slender figure. He has a head of messy black hair that he only bothers to cut when it gets in his eyes. If you look really closely, you can make out the faintest of chin hair starting to crop up. Though he spends most of his time on the rooftops, he has unusually pale skin, as a result of his clothing choices, and the fact that he usually goes out at night. Despite his active lifestyle, his eyes always seem a bit droopy, probably because of his odd sleep schedule.
His hero outfit of choice is a purple hoodie with the hood up, a techie oxygen mask covering the bottom half of his face. He also wears dark gray baggy joggers and black sneakers with white stripes. Honestly not much different from what he wears casually, besides the mask.
BACKGROUND:
The sound of wind rushed past, and a choir of hurried footfalls peppered the rooftops around Nishi; a soundscape as familiar to him as the beating of his own heart. Vaulting over railings, soaring over AC units, the routine so ingrained in him that he hardly paid it any thought. Right now he had more important things on his mind. The members of his crew closed the distance, a few even passing him. He stared blankly at the city lights streaking below him, allowing just enough of a break in the darkness to see the path ahead. At this point, the rest of the crew rushed passed him, all clearing a particularly far jump with ease. Before Nishi realized he didn’t have enough speed to clear the gap, he was already mid-jump. His calloused fingers scraped against the concrete ledge, just barely able to keep from plummeting a solid twenty feet down.
His feet meekly scuttled against the wall as he struggled to pull himself to safety. “Oh, damn!” Nishi heard a concerned voice before he was grabbed by the forearm and heaved up onto the roof with a thud. The pair took a second to catch their breath. “You always make that jump! What happened? You doin’ alright?” Nishi looked at the ground, not wanting to meet his gaze, “Yeah I’m good, just kinda spaced out. Sorry, Tanaka.” “Nervous about U.A, huh?” Nishi gave a quick nod in response. “Yeah… guess I’m easy to read.”
“Hey, are you guys good, or what?”, the rest of the group was waiting on the next rooftop. “Yep! Go ahead, we’ll catch up!” The two received a quick thumbs up before their crew was rushing toward the horizon. Tanaka’s attention turned back to Nishi, “So, what’s with the cold feet?” “It’s everything, you know? Like, what if I’m not good enough to make the cut? I mean, I barely scraped by the entrance exams.” Nishi’s eyes began to glaze over, “And I’m 17 already; isn’t that too old to be a first year? They’ll laugh at me for sure. I’m so unreliable... Like, remember that one time that I-” Tanaka knocked on the top of Nishi’s temple, “Dude. Get out of your head.” Nishi blinked and rubbed at the pain.
“You’ve gotta stop making up problems that don’t exist! Focus on what’s actually in front of you! When you’re out here running with us, what do you do when there’s something in your way?” Nishi’s face straightened up as he spoke, “Find a way over it.” “Exactly! Any problem you face in there is no different than a fence out here! I didn’t tell you to try for U.A because I thought you’d fail, I did it because I know you won’t!”
Nishi looked at him with a smile, “You’re right, Tanaka.” With a resounding clap, the two locked hands, “I won’t let you down!” Their eyes were forced into a squint as the day’s first light filtered through the buildings of Musutafu. “It’s a long way to U.A from here, you better get going, dude. If you miss your first class, they might actually kick you out,” he said with a cheeky grin. “W-Wait, really?” he could feel the sweat starting to bead. Tanaka closed his eyes and shrugged, “Probably.” By the time he opened them, Nishi was gone; the only trace being the sound of panicked sprinting.
