HUMBLE BEGINNINGS
Riley stretched her clawed toes, tapping her sandals on the sandy shores of Dagobah Beach. It was still early in the morning- the sun had only now peered over the horizon, filling the sky with shades of orange and pink. Peach and magenta, amber and rose, calling for the start of a brand new day. Beneath her palms, golden sand extended at a gentle slope. Soft dunes tumbling to hug the briny water. Each ocean wave was laced with foam and subtle green hues that contrasted the spires of apartments further behind the beach.
This early in the morning, Dagobah wasn't crowded. All she could hear beside the seashore were the squawks of seagulls and churning of the tides. The lone mutant wore a short, pale blue skirt with a vibrant yellow tank-top, complete with glittery sequins along it's shoulder-straps. Riley stretched her arms again, getting comfortable atop her spotted, sandy towel. In these peaceful moments, it felt like the troubles of the world were taken away by the waves. The student was only snapped from her relaxation by a yap and the sound of paws trotting across the sand. A red ball, still dripping with a few strands of saliva, was nudged towards her with a pleading whine. She didn't come out here early for no reason, after all. The animal shelter she volunteered had tasked her with helping care for a large, cottony white canine. The Samoyed, aptly named Sammy by the tag on his collar, stirred upright with another gleeful yip as Riley picked up the ball, throwing it across the beach in a curveball for the mound of fluff to sprint after.
Riley turned back to the city, chittering in thought. She could see some of the lights in the apartment complexes flickering on, one by one. Her third year at U.A High had yet to officially start, but she still had to prepare. Her tail pulled her bookbag closer. The zipper could barely close around the hoards of notebooks and folders she'd acquired to bring to her new dorm. It wouldn't be long until these easy days of peace came to a halt, and her training to become a Hero would once again resume.
But for now, she wanted enjoy these last days of rest to their fullest.
Today was going to be a good day.
