NAME: Oshiro Rin
TITLE:
AGE: 28
GENDER: Woman (she/her)
QUIRK NAME: REFLECT
QUIRK CLASSIFICATION: EMITTER
QUIRK DESCRIPTION: Rin can store the kinetic energy from any and all impacts on her person and then redistribute that energy into her own attacks. She has control over how much of this stored energy she wants to redistribute, and where to redistribute it IE a punch, a kick or a jump. If enough kinetic energy has been stored, this gives her the illusion of (brief) super-strength; she can punch a villain through a wall, or jump over a building. Once the kinetic energy is spent, however, she must recharge it.
QUIRK POWER LIMIT: Rin can only store kinetic energy in her body for four minutes and twenty-two seconds before it starts to naturally dissipate, meaning a stored punch from four minutes and twenty-three seconds ago would not be available to redistribute
FLAW: Hardstar has a fear of heights and falling. Manageable inside a building, provided she stands several meters away from guard rails. Less manageable in emergency situations.
APPEARANCE: Rin is an athletic, muscular woman of around five foot nine.
BACKGROUND: Rin was born of the Oshiro clan, an old and wealthy family focused on producing the most famous heroes Japan, and the world, had ever seen. On the surface, they seemed a wholesome, brand-friendly bunch of superheroes; in private, however, the Oshiro clan was anything but wholesome.
Rin was born directly of the Oshiro patriarch, Daichi. Daichi's ambition required that his children show strong Quirk potential by the age of two. If they did not, they would go neglected in the stately Oshiro household; if they're lucky, an Oshiro child or maid will take pity on them and raise them. Some weren't so lucky.
Rin was the final child of Daichi, now a sixty-year-old man, and the third child of his fifth wife. That wife, Chou, had the ability to store kinetic energy and release it in a vast, tremulous shout (Quirk: Shakescream). Unfortunately, she could not control her Quirk very well, and kinetic energy could only be stored. Daichi, on the other hand, had the ability to, quite slowly, 'charge' power in his limbs for up to ten minutes, releasing that power in one burst with a punch or kick (Quirk: Slowpunch).
Daichi theorised that their two quirks would hybridise quite nicely, and so a marriage was arranged between Chou's family. She was promised to Daichi in exchange for a very tidy dowry, and that was that. A month later they were married. Six years later, Rin was born.
Rin's eldest sibling inherited Daichi's Slowpunch, which manifested around his first birthday, while the middle child never demonstrated any sign of a Quirk. Rin was the last hope of her father's latest experiment, a hope that seemed to fail, as her Quirk did not manifest by her second birthday. Nor her third, nor her fourth, nor even her fifth. She was designated Quirkless and shunned by most of her siblings. Her entire matriarchal branch was considered faulty, and Chou was sent back to her family in disgrace. Daichi, approaching his seventies, decided not to remarry; his dynasty was strong.
Rin and her Quirkless brother were brought up by a sympathetic older sibling by the name of Hideki, who was also shunned due to a weak Quirk (the ability to manipulate small amounts of water; a party trick, but nothing Daichi deemed worthy of his attention). Children of the Oshiro clan do not go to elementary school; they're taught at home by Daichi and older siblings, both traditional subjects and a 'young heroes' training regime constructed by Daichi personally.
Hideki taught Rin and her brother Katsuro how to defend themselves; by the age of seven and nine, respectively, they were both proficient hand-to-hand combatants. In addition, he taught them how to read and write and basic mathematics and science. An outcast himself, Hideki was self-taught; he had been much older than his siblings before he had learned any of this, having to play catch-up once he was sent to middle school. He wanted to make sure that these two could cope with the transition.
Despite her history, Rin was a bubbly child, optimistic, and passionate about everything; learning, training, the world. In contrast, Katsuro was dour and sullen. The two often bickered about the way of the world, and as they grew older, the nature of their family. Rin believed they were a force for good, despite misgivings about her father's methods; her brother considered them a curse
It was at middle school that Rin's Quirk finally manifested. A classroom bully recognised her family name and decided to rag on the little Quirkless girl. His power was, essentially, to create lead objects from his nails and bash people with them. After blocking and dodging a few hits, Rin took a weighty blow to her chest, cracking her rib. Staggering back, she howled with fury and lashed out with her first, catching the bully square in the jaw and sending him careening into, and through, a nearby wall.
The school was furious, but Oshiro Daichi was delighted. Her daughter had it; the power he had theorised. These days, it was very rare for a Quirk to manifest so late, but there it was. Daichi didn't even have much extra training to do; Hideki's combat lessons meant that Rin could already handle herself. All they really needed to do was learn the nature of her Quirk, and teach her how to use. Rin, despite her strained relationship with her father, enjoyed the newfound attention from Daichi, and together they discovered exactly how her Quirk worked. Daichi dubbed it 'Reflect'.
Rin went from being the family outcast to the up-and-coming Oshiro-clan superstar. Her older siblings now gave her love and respect, and she was allowed to eat with the rest of the family. However, she became readily aware of the hateful stare from one member of the Oshiro family; Katsuro.
Eventually, she confronted him. Katsuro accused his youngest sister of forgetting where she came from; Rin had barely spent any time with him or Hideki in recent years. Rin, tearfully, argued that she'd been so busy training with Daichi and her other siblings that she simply hadn't had the capacity.
Katsuro ignored this. "Why don't you ask father what happens to Quirkless Oshiro children when they turn sixteen?" he demanded, although his voice was soft.
Rin returned to her training, but her mind was racing. It was true; statistically, there must be a handful of the Oshiro borne of either Daichi or her older siblings who were Quirkless. How come she didn't see any?
Several weeks later, Rin asked her father that question.
"They were tossed out like the garbage they are. Were, in some cases. Fetch me some more tea, won't you, Rin?"
Rin made it into U.A. High School no problem. She had both Hideki and Daichi to thank for that. She excelled academically, but struggled to make friends with the other students. They were all too aware of her name, as was she. The Oshiro name was no longer something to be proud of; instead, it was a burden. It both required her to be the best, and it carried the weight of her father's misdeeds. Some of the other students regarded her with a distant awe; she regarded them with envy.
During her time at U.A., she wondered what became of Katsuro, the latest Quirkless Oshiro to hit sixteen.
She immediately landed a spot with a hero agency on graduation, and became a good earner. However, a thought had been nagging at the back of her mind; what about the Oshiro siblings who were cast away? Where had they gone?
She quit her job after saving up enough for a clean break, leaving the Oshiro household and her weakening father. It was fitting that, as the ravages of age and neglect took hold of him, he was frailing physically and mentally; his body could barely charge for longer than four minutes. Still, the best healthcare money could pay for kept him alive.
She travelled all over the city, than the prefecture, then the nation. Despite her best efforts, she found no Quirkless Oshiros. They had receded into the world, lost to time and memory. How many had there been? She hadn't thought to ask anyone.
Rin never returned home. She was worried about that growing rage inside of her. She was worried about what she might do to her father, and those older siblings who had just let it all happen, if she did.
Distancing herself from the Oshiro name, Rin continued to do good hero work as (the) Hardstar, a vibrant, effective hero with a will of steel. Despite her interior war, she never allowed her doubts to surface on the job, and she quickly became a popular hero in Musutafu City.
Now, she's been approached by U.A. to take up a teaching role, and she's pretty sure she's gonna accept.
