NAME: Yaiba Kisuke
AGE: 15
GENDER: Male, He/Him
QUIRK NAME: WOOD LACQUER
QUIRK CLASSIFICATION: EMITTER
QUIRK DESCRIPTION: Kisuke’s quirk allows him to, at will, secrete an oily substance from his finger tips which. When in contact with non-organic materials, the substance quickly evaporates. When it comes in contact with wood, however, the substance hardens into a solid coat, substantially increasing is tensile strength and general durability while also giving it a distinct black sheen. Each coat increases the durability of the wood it covers. As the coat wears off over time, the black sheen fades back into the color of the wood, giving Kisuke a visible timer for how long before he needs to apply a new coat. While his quirk is officially registered as “Wood Lacquer”, Kisuke himself refers to his quirk as “Black Blade”.
QUIRK POWER LIMIT: Extended use of Kisuke’s quirk begins to manifest in a numbing first of the tips of his fingers where the oil is secreted. This numbing sensation then extends to the rest of his hands. As he continues to use his quirk, the durability of each coat slightly worsens and the color of each coat changes from its normal jet black to a more drab gray matte. Prolonged use of his quirk causes his hands to become rigid but jittery, making it difficult to close his hands into a fist and causing pain when gripping onto objects. Continued use of his quirk causes temporary loss of motor function to his fingers and eventually his hands. If he pushes his quirk even further, the temporary loss can become permanent, also meaning that he technically cannot use his quirk any longer.

COMBAT FLAW: POOR FORM > While Kisuke would refer to himself as "self taught", what this really means is that he has no real experience sparring or seeing actual technique in action or having to go through the difficult motions of physical training. Instead, Kisuke had drilled into himself "form" that is subpar, leaving obvious openings in his stance, making him much less stable. In fact, he doesn't really even know how to properly hold a sword, preferring to hold it out with one arm with a one-armed hammer grip which favors neither stability nor reach. Furthermore, he had spent so much time trying to make his moves look cool (in his opinion), that it's incredibly difficult for a teacher to fix his bad habits and ingrain good habits into him.
PERSONAL FLAW: OBNOXIOUS > As a young boy with his upbringing, Kisuke has a whole slew of problems. The most obvious to those around him though is simply how obnoxious he is. He’ll attempt to butt into any conversation and despite wanting to come off as a “lone warrior”, he also very much enjoys attention. He is a braggart, talking about how well he took down the robots at the test course along with how many support points he had by the time they were done.
APPEARANCE: Kisuke is a young man with obscure features under his miss worn uniform in a style that hasn’t been popular in decades. He has a nappy head of long, wavy hair along with a few strands of facial hair which he refuses to shave but also doesn’t seem to get much longer over time. Underneath his peach fuzz, however, Kisuke actually does have something of a baby face, which is something he specifically seeks to hide. His proportions are modest. He stands at 172 cm, but will wear high-top sneakers to try to make himself look a little taller, but is also still growing. Most noticeably, he has a pair of striking amber eyes, though his other features are much more stereotypically Asian.
BACKGROUND: Kisuke is the only child to a single mother, and therefore he grew up mostly under the care of his grandparents. His mother’s family had been in the restaurant business for several generations thanks to their quirk allowing them to secrete a type of cooking oil from their own bodies. The family had managed to build up a booming restaurant, maintaining two Michelin stars for longer than Kisuke had been alive. Quirk marriage slowly refined the family’s inherited abilities right down to his mother, whose quirk both gave her the oil power and the ability to resist high heat resulting from cooking. All of this, however, ended with Kisuke. When his mother was pregnant with him, she was put under a good deal of pressure from all sides to terminate the pregnancy, but had ultimately decided to keep the child. Her father highly disapproved and nearly disowned her, but reluctantly took care of the newborn boy. When his quirk manifested, however, they found immediately that it was useless for restaurant business, dissolving the moment it hit a grill and ending up making food greasier when he touched it. Had Kisuke not shown talent in cooking, regardless of his quirk, he may have even been disowned.
Kisuke grew up never knowing his father. His grandfather was his only father figure, and was very strict, sometimes telling Kisuke things that a boy his age should not be knowing. Kisuke did not have a very pleasant childhood. For the longest time, Kisuke’s quirk was registered simply as “oil” because it was all his family really had any use for. It was only on accident, when Kisuke was given a pair of wooden chopsticks, when he found out the true nature of his quirk, that it was changed to “wood lacquer”, only to be forgotten by the rest of his family, who for all intents and purposes, treated him as if he were quirkless. He was mostly home schooled, and therefore didn’t have any friends growing up. Instead, his grandfather trained him to take over the business once his mother got too old, but Kisuke never wanted this. His mother, too busy on her own, left Kisuke alone but with an internet connection, and though things were generally safe for him, the communities he had taken part with were a big influence on him. That is, he began taking on delusions of grandeur, or perhaps escapism. He “practiced martial arts” thinking they were cool, by looking at videos on the internet found through simple searches, secluded in his room and far from sight. He bought a bamboo practice sword and kept it secret from the rest of his family, swinging it around in his room in silence, careful not to actually hit anything at the risk of being discovered.
When the time came, under his delusions, Kisuke entered into UA, hiding the application from his parents. When the time came for the entrance exam, he told them that he was just “going for a walk”. Fortunately for him, he was allowed to bring his wooden sword under the pretense that he needed it in order to properly use his quirk, even if he explained as such in the most obnoxious way possible. Kisuke, who was not a formally trained hero, or one whose quirk really was properly suited for combat, had just barely managed to skate through the entrance exam with the minimal required score to pass. He was unremarkable compared to many of his peers, even with his weapon, but all the way through, he was incredibly boastful. Loud even. That summer, he really let things get to his head, especially as he hit his growth spurt. He grew a good three inches and had his first facial hair which, when his mother told him to shave with his grandfather even attempting to teach him, he refused. This was his first act of outward rebellion. Even if he still needed to live in their house, he had already felt like an adult, and when the acceptance letter came from the school, his family was surprised and shocked, and though not outwardly, so was Kisuke, knowing that if he had told anybody, the immediate thought would have been that he failed.
Then, with a big head, Kisuke turned toward the school’s campus.

QUIRK TECHNICAL LIMIT: In addition to needing wood in order to use his quirk, the exact usefulness of his quirk is also dependent on the original strength of the wood used. Though Kisuke’s quirk can turn soft balsa wood into a viable weapon, it takes much more effort to do so than a harder wood such as hickory. Wood that has been to rotted cannot be salvaged at all, and the lacquer if used too much on such materials will actually cause it to fall apart.
QUIRK BARRIER: In line with his lone swordsman persona, Kisuke stubbornly refuses to use his quirk on wood other than wood that has been fashioned into the shape of a sword. Even if he would otherwise be defenseless, Kisuke would rather put himself in harm’s way than use his power on any random hunk of wood. Due to this personal hang-up, his ability to utilize his quirk is also directly connected to his swordsmanship that he had “self taught”, which is to say, practically untrained and with more bad habits than good ones. There is also rumor that Kisuke can use his quirk through his feet in addition to his hands, however most of these are simple speculation and Kisuke himself has allegedly never attempted as much.

COSTUME: NOZZLE > Kisuke’s costume was originally one made to look like a medieval knight, however, he was instead given a costume which was mostly a combination of spandex and lightweight carbon fiber, which was black and red to his own specifications, but also much more subdued and practical. The real functional part of his costume, however, are the augmented gloves that come with, which help supplement his movement to mitigate the consequences of overusing his quirk, as well as helps him spread the lacquer over a surface through tiny, specialized nozzles at his fingertips.
EXPERTISE: COOK > Although he will not admit it, Kisuke’s upbringing was that of a chef. His grandfather taught him not only the basic fundamentals but also very advanced techniques. Because his family owns a teppanyaki-style restaurant, he is most familiar with this style of cooking. However, he is also skilled in butchering meat, again as taught to him by his grandfather. At the moment, however, this doesn’t help him very much as a pro hero.COMBAT FLAW: POOR FORM > While Kisuke would refer to himself as "self taught", what this really means is that he has no real experience sparring or seeing actual technique in action or having to go through the difficult motions of physical training.
