NAME: Maki Ken
CODE NAME: Boomer
ALIGNMENT: Pro Hero
TITLE: Yellow Maki & The Crisis-Struck Hero
AGE: 38 years old
GENDER: Male
QUIRK NAME: HEROIC HEART
QUIRK CLASSIFICATION: MUTANT
QUIRK DESCRIPTION: A strange mutation gland formed around his heart, allowing Ken total control over his heart. Despite being larger than most hearts, his body has adapted by granting him a larger, almost hollowed-out chest. Displaced organs are positioned lower, whilst his heart is suspended within this chamber and access is blocked by mesh-like doors. Its size allows it to beat at different volumes and strengths, granting him access to sound-based attacks and manipulations over his body's blood and oxygen flow. Any sound-based attacks must be directed from the center of his chest. Additionally, his heart can heal itself similar to skin; this grants it some resistance and an ability to operate even while damaged.
QUIRK POWER LIMIT: Due to being from his heart, the decibel and energy generated inside of Ken and used as a projectile can be immensely powerful. Although primarily for use against organic or water-based objects, its power allows it to dent softer metals or launch individuals. Suffice to say his quirk is very powerful, but it still uses his heart; actively controlling his heart to generate this power can exhaust him anywhere between a few minutes of extreme combat to up to around half an hour of prolonged fighting. After this point, his control loosens and becomes unpredictable to the point he can only use his quirk sparingly; after an hour, any attempts to control his heart will fail and cause extreme chest pains or even make him pass out.
QUIRK TECHNICAL LIMIT: Due to its mutant nature, Ken can use his heart anywhere and at any time. However, apart from its time limits, using his heart erroneously can lead to body malfunctions. If he uses fast heartbeats, his blood flow increases and can cause him to bleed-out. If he uses his heart too slowly, he can pass out from poor oxygen transition. If an electrical charge reaches the inside of his chest, it can disable his quirk for up to an hour. Additionally, he is more susceptible to heart problems as a form of sickness; getting a heart murmur is like getting a fever, causing his quirk to act irregularly for a while.
QUIRK FACTOR:
Power 2
Finesse 1
Stamina 2
SUPER MOVE: SPEAK FROM THE HEART > Rapidly pumping his heart, Ken generates sound that ricochets and echoes within his chamber. Once it reaches the overflow point, he slows his heart to a single pulse to convert the noise into his body. For the next minute, any attack he connects with someone or something will transmit sound by touch to cause extreme sound impairment through vibration; this allows him to attack someone who is deaf or covering their ears.
COSTUME: BATTLE VISOR > Though he already has a natural mesh that protects his heart and cannot hear the noise inside of him, Ken wears an experimental headgear designed to let him fight again. Apart from being stylish, it wraps around his eyes, over his ears, and around the back of his head like a circlet. The visor gives him decibel readings of all sounds in the form of color-tinting, while also tracking his internal noise levels. It grants him hearing again and can turn off if it might damage his hearing further.
EXPERTISE: HEART-STRUCK > As a necessity to use his quirk, Ken understands both the dangers of sound to human bodies as well as the effects of heartbeats and heart-health. While not a substitute for a doctor, this allows him to quickly determine a person's ability to hear tones and the strength of their heart (directly connected to their fatigue).
FLAW: Partially Deaf. In his original years as a hero, Ken made a mistake calculating the power of his heart. After an attack was redirected at him, he was left almost entirely deaf. Because of this, he relies on his Battle Visor both in and out of costume. Without it, he communicates by reading written words due to a lack of sign language experience. Electrical attacks that strike him can hinder, damage, or cut-off his hearing depending on how it affects his visor.
APPEARANCE: In his late thirties, Ken still looks young but worn out; signs of exhaustion mar his features like scars. Due to his barrel-like chest, he's about seven and a half feet tall and broad-shouldered. He's pale-skinned and has large blue eyes with a handsome jaw, yet his ears sport small jack-in studs that race along between the space between his ear and head, wrapping down into hearing-aid styled covers. Aside from his exhaustion and strange chest, he appears to be a rather well-fit person and built stocky to support his body. One could compare him to some toys or action figures.
Aside from always trying to keep his visor on, Ken wears a jacket, jeans, and a sleeveless shirt. Even though he has returned to hero work, he doesn't have an older costume to wear.
BACKGROUND: Ken was one son among the once-famous Maki family, well-known in Northern Japan for their heart-related quirks. His grandfather had carried the first larger heart and could run longer, his father had a slightly larger chest and gained strength. Though his quirk culminated in the largest chest, his heart's fine controls were beyond the family's expectations and ensured Ken was unable to use his quirk for long. But as a young boy, he was groomed to take up the Maki mantle and assist Japan as a hero. But unlike the rest who stayed local, he chose to go to UA High and become part of its pedigree. Countless friends and family saw him becoming an astounding member of the Professional Hero workplace in a matter of years. His life had been ideal and basic until that point; he was young and agencies called him hoping to get him to be a sidekick. Yet he chose to go it alone, striking out with confidence.
For two years, Ken was considered to be an up-and-coming legend in the works. He had arrests and battles that had made his quirk appear just as powerful as the Maki family was known for. Yet one day he encountered a villain that could redirect sound. The confidence in the young hero had left him on the ropes but ultimately victorious; this villain swore he would find Ken and get revenge. The twenty-two-year-old hero had heard it before and wrote it off. All the deals and fame had been exploding with the surge of the internet. As far as he was concerned, villains like him would be beneath him in a year's time.
But not even a year later, that villain broke out and found Ken. Caught off-guard, Ken was once more pressed into battle... only this time he wasn't so lucky. His signature move at the time was turned back on him and almost blew his own eardrums out. The media coverage of the event called it a disaster. Without his hearing, it was impossible to believe he could participate as a proper hero. The changing of times ensured that word of his damaged ears spread and countless sponsors and agencies turned their backs on him. By the time he was out of the hospital, Ken's entire life crumbled and his hero license was revoked. Despite all the potential he had once held, Ken's career exploded and he was left without anything.
For years, his fall-from-grace garnered less and less attention. What reputation and stature people thought he might have held evaporated with every leaked story about his failing life. His girlfriend left him, his house and car repossessed, and even his costume being sold on auction. The Yellow Maki - his original hero name - was dubbed the Crisis-Struck Hero by the media and raving stories. The only people who kept their arms open had been his family; the Maki always acted as a united family and even though their quirk had spread wide and deviated, his extended family was more than willing to give him a bed every once in a while. Traveling and living on the street continued taking its toll, yet the times changed as the internet's pace rapidly increased in growth. In his childhood and early years, the internet had been a tool; yet it steadily became a part of life for everyone.
Two years ago, the thirty-six-year-old man was approached by an old classmate from UA High. A woman skilled in the creation of support gear, she had spent half of her life dedicated to studying medicine. The advancements in hearing aids mixed with neural interfacing had allowed her a chance to offer him something he had once lost: his hearing. Ken had poorly adjusted to being deaf even after all these years, yet didn't question it. The surgery was dangerous but he yearned for a chance to do more than struggle and leech on his family. Yet he was completely surprised at how disconnected from the world he had been in his funk, walking through her lab at bewilderment at the state of technology's rapid growth. The Maki family was old fashioned and too focused on hero-work to keep updated technology. They focused on functional over the ease of improvement that recent years had spawned. Even though he had seen them before, smartphones had completely and utterly changed when he was shown hers. His trust in the friend and this new age wasn't certain but it didn't change his decision. Ken underwent the surgery to get the hearing aids grafted behind his ears and waited a year more for the technology to be designed.
At thirty-seven, he underwent training and experiments. Countless trials and experiments to tune data and technology. Although his visor could be replicated, it would be expensive without more testing. Ken turned into a lab rat but enjoyed the meals and chances to get a bed for more than a day in a week. All around him, eyes began paying attention again. But little did he know, being given a room by his old classmate meant he was around tech-savvy individuals almost all the time when he was back at their agency. They called him Boomer and - when he questioned them - they said it was due to how loud his heart was. The good-hearted hero had no idea what it meant given his disconnected from the modern age. By the end of the trials, he had barely used the internet for more than a handful of minutes despite almost a decade of being away from any form of it. Now supported by technology, however, he ignored all of the noise rather ironically to focus on a new goal. Under a promise to join his friend's agency, he once more applied and took the tests to restore his hero license.
Now almost forty, he returned to the Professional Hero line of work under the STANDFAST Hero Agency, one of its seven heroes. Although he was the oldest - only comparable to their most veteran hero - his friend stood by him and took on being his handler. He didn't feel like the young and flashy Yellow Maki anymore. They offered to give him a new uniform but he refused.
He wasn't going to be Yellow Maki anymore. He'd represent the Maki family only by example as a new hero. Ken would become Boomer.
