NAME: Sya Shi
AGE: 19
GENDER: Female
QUIRK NAME: BURNING NERVE
QUIRK CLASSIFICATION: EMITTER
QUIRK DESCRIPTION: To put it very simply, Sya's Quirk is that her touch is capable of inflicting intense pain to her victim. More specifically, her hands are constantly emitting small waves of energy that are harmless until she makes direct skin-to-skin contact with someone. Once she does, these waves will enter the person's body and, without actually causing any physical harm, send their pain receptors into overdrive, resulting in intense pain in that spot.
After she lets go, this pain will linger for a few minutes while slowly-but-steadily fading. On the opposite end of the spectrum, if she maintains physical contact for two minutes at minimum, the energy that's setting off her pain receptors will slowly begin to spread to other parts of her body. While it's very rarely enough to be fatal, the intensity of the pain, depending on where/how long she touches someone, can be enough to make someone black out.
Despite what one might assume, this quirk won't amplify any pain that the target might already be under. It will still be intense, but it won't be any worse than it would have been if that particular area was unharmed and completely free of pain. Additionally, prolonging the amount of time that Sya makes direct contact with the target doesn't lengthen the time it takes for the pain to fade away in any way. It will always take a few minutes to fade, regardless of how long they were affected by it.
As a side note, her quirk gets its name because that that was the best way someone who had been subjected to it could describe the pain; it felt as if every single nerve in whatever area she was touching was being set on fire. Needless to say, it was excruciating, and they were completely and utterly shocked to learn that no actual damage had been done to their body. Last but not least, she can only use it with one hand at a time, though she can choose which one she wants to use.
QUIRK POWER LIMIT: Technically speaking, her quirk is always active. That said, it only actually manifests when its activation condition is met; i.e. direct contact. It must be skin-to-skin contact, meaning it won't work over someone's clothing, or if she's wearing any sort of handwear. While it will technically work with just her fingers, it's far less effective than it would be if she were able to place her entire hand on someone.
There's only one major limit that keeps her from using her quirk indefinitely. Whenever she actively uses her quirk for more than a few seconds, the skin on her hand will slowly-but-steadily start drying out. The drier it gets, the harder it will be for her to keep it up, especially if it reaches the point where her skin gets so dry it begins cracking. It's usually nothing some high-quality hand cream or moisturizer won't fix, but it can be hard to find time to apply it in the middle of a fight.
QUIRK FACTOR:
Power 3
Finesse 1
Stamina 1
FLAW: Her poor self-esteem and longing for companionship leads to her being exceptionally easy to lead on or manipulate. This is especially true for anyone who can seemingly help her redeem herself; while she's long since embraced the label of "villain" that the world seemed so desperate to place on her, there's still a very small part of her that can't help but hold onto that slim and ever-flickering hope that she can make up for what she's done and set on the path of a Hero.
Either way, she's far too trusting for her own good, and, in spite of everything that's happened to her, has yet to realize the sad truth that, if something seems too good to be true, it probably is. Additionally, she's prone to co-dependency whenever someone treats her even remotely well; given her current state, being treated with kindness is not something she'd expect anytime soon, so she's likely to cling to someone who shows it to her, even if she knows they're just using her.
APPEARANCE: Standing at about 5'7" and having a somewhat boyish appearance, Sya is a somewhat imposing figure. However, years of horrible luck have taken a toll on her, not just emotionally but physically as well. Though she's good at putting on a happy facade when needed, her default expression tends to be one of bitterness and disillusionment. Her eyes, which are often cold and borderline lifeless, also tend to reflect how weary of the world she is.
She has long, pale green hair, which is almost always unkempt, and she rarely does anything other than tie it back into a single large ponytail. Due to how infrequently she's able to get an actual meal (given she's effectively homeless), she's fairly underweight; not quite to a dangerous level, but she's still very noticeably skinny. She usually wears baggy clothing, though (see the 'Costume' section for details), so this won't be immediately noticeable to the average person.
BACKGROUND: Born in Hong Kong to a waitress and an overworked salaryman, Sya's life was fairly normal. Both of her parents' quirks were so unremarkable that, for the longest time, she didn't even realize they even had Quirks to begin with. Even now, she would struggle to remember what they were. Needless to say, neither of them had any aspirations to be heroes and were content to live normal lives. But not Sya. Even at a very young age, she had been inspired by various stories about heroes and wanted to become one herself.
Her parents were hesitant about the idea. While they had nothing against heroes in and of themselves, they didn't like the idea of their only daughter risking her life to fight super-powered villains. But, eventually, after seeing how much she wanted it, they relented and decided to support her dream. Her first major roadblock in her path to becoming a hero came when her Quirk finally manifested. The incident itself was innocent enough, but had far-reaching consequences that heavily impacted her life.
She was playing outside with a few friends, and one of them tripped and fell. Being the good samaritan that she was, she immediately rushed over and reached a hand down to help him up. The moment he took her hand, however, he immediately started screaming out in agony, loud enough to alert the kids' parents nearby. Sya was understandably confused, as she was sure she hadn't done anything to illicit such a reaction, and none of the other kids could tell what it was she actually did to make the boy scream like that. One thing was certain, though; he definitely wasn't faking it.
Even worse, when several adults came rushing to the scene, it painted a poor picture for the girl. What they saw was a boy clutching his hand and obviously in a lot of pain, and Sya standing over him. Jumping to the natural conclusion, the boy's outraged parents threatened to sue, only stopping when their doctor revealed that she hadn't actually harmed the boy in any way. Or, at least, there wasn't any actual damage to his body. And with no one knowing what Sya actually did, there was little they could do about it.
That said, Sya's friends, despite her being just as shocked and dismayed as they were, all completely turned on Sya for "attacking" the boy. Later that evening, it happened again. Her father, in an attempt to comfort the girl, held his hand out to her. He wanted to take her out to her favorite restaurant, in an attempt to cheer her up. When she took it, his eyes went wide and he started screaming out in pain as well. However, instead of reacting in anger, he suddenly had a hunch. Thus, Sya was immediately taken to a doctor who specialized in Quirks.
It turned out her father's hunch was spot on. After some testing, it was confirmed that her Quirk was to inflict incredibly pain with a mere touch of her hand, and it appeared that she had no control over it. While this revelation did exonerate her of her "attack" against the boy, making everyone involved realize that it was all just a horrible misunderstanding, the other kids still didn't exactly warm up to Sya afterwards. It didn't change the fact that it happened in the first place, or that it could just as easily happen again.
Salvation seemingly came in the form of a sympathetic teacher, one who had a friend growing up that went through a similar experience. It turned out that her Quirk was a simple but useful one; extremely high pain tolerance. While it didn't mean she didn't feel any pain at all, it did mean that pain itself, even something intense like what is caused by Sya's quirk, isn't nearly as inhibiting or debilitating as it would be for a normal person. Thus, she, with the blessings of both the school and her parents volunteered to be something of a guinea pig to figure out the full extent of the girl's quirk.
Ultimately, Sya never did figure out any ways to control or turn it off. But the teacher was a trooper and despite the experiments pushing even her quirk to their limits, they were able to figure out more than enough about Sya's to help her work around it and live at least a marginally normal life. It was through these that they discovered it only applies to direct skin contact, thus all she had to do was wear a pair of thin gloves to keep it from triggering. Of course, it still raised questions on what sort of hero could ever make use of such a horrible quirk.
This discouraged the girl, but that same teacher continued to stand by her side. It was thanks to said teacher that Sya was able to keep going and strive for the path of the Hero. As much as she wanted to attend UA, since many considered it to be the best of the the best, her parents couldn't afford to send her to Japan so she ultimately settled on a not-as-prominent-but-still-fairly-good school that was closer to home in China. Despite the somewhat sinister nature of her Quirk, she managed to do well for herself. Despite their initial doubts, many saw a bright future for the girl.
Which made it all the more devastating when her future as a Pro Hero came crumbling down around her. She had done well as an intern, having earned her provincial license. Before long, she was ready to do make her debut. A small-time villain had robbed a bank, severely (but non-fatally) injuring several civilians in the process. The plan was simple; Sya would intercept him and use her Quirk to immobilize him. However, she didn't notice until it was too late that another Hero who was also making their debut had a similar plan.
The villain, on the other hand, caught onto this fast enough to avoid Sya's initial tackle, resulting in her grabbing this other Hero instead. Without thinking, she immediately took off her glove and grabbed him by the back of his neck, causing him to scream out in pain. This, however, turned out to be a deadly mistake, as this would-be Hero's quirk was that his screams had an explosive force behind them. She herself managed to avoid the blast, but many bystanders weren't so lucky. No one died, thankfully, but nearly twenty people had to be rushed to the ICU and several buildings had been severely damage; a few small shops had been outright destroyed.
Even worse, the villain got away in the ensuing chaos. It wasn't until after the fact that Sya had realized the huge mistake it was. But surely, they'd realize it was all just an unfortunate accident. Right?
Wrong.
Immediately, the Hero accused her of intentionally getting in his way, even going so far as to assume that she was in league with the villain the two of them had, unknowingly at the same time, been chasing. She tried her best to deny it and explain that it was all an unfortunate accident, but guilt consumed her when she saw all of the devastation she'd inadvertently caused. Unable to think straight, she ran away. Unfortunately, word got around fast.
It didn't take long for authorities to track her down. Labeling her as a villain, several heroes were called on to bring her to justice. She tried desperately to prove she meant no harm, but one way or another, her Quirk worked against her, compounding onto the various misunderstandings already in place. Soon, her parents were forced to turn their backs on her; not wanting to have to answer for their daughter's "crimes" themselves their choice was to simply disown her, leaving her to fend for herself. The straw that broke the camel's back, however, was when she made a desperate plea to the teacher who had helped her all those years ago. Surely, she would help her. Or so she thought.
Instead, that teacher also turned on her, not even bothering to let the girl try to explain herself. She also quickly learned that she had not only been expelled from the school she was attending once the staff caught wind of what happened, but that she would be permanently barred from ever trying to attain a Hero License in China ever again. Sya had held onto a small hope that there'd be enough of a loophole. If she couldn't become a Hero in China, then maybe she could become one somewhere else. Thus, gathering all of the money she had saved up over the years, she had just enough money for a one-way trip to Musutafu, Japan. True, it'd be difficult to start over, but not impossible.
Unfortunately, word got around quickly. Someone had caught onto her plan, and while they were too late to stop her from boarding the plane, they weren't too late to inform the Japanese authorities that a known criminal was fleeing their country and probably heading to Japan. The one saving grace was that she was apparently fairly low on their priority list. Not enough to be able to wander about without a care in the world, but she was overshadowed by far more well-known and dangerous villains; so long as she laid low, she'd be able to eke out a living. Maybe. But one thing was certain. Her prospects for becoming a hero were getting bleaker by the day.
Three years passed. She managed to get by on some shady-but-not-entirely-illegal work and the occasional "five-fingered discount". The money she got was hardly enough to find a place to stay, but it did keep food in her belly. One day, however, through one final stroke of terrible luck, she bumped into someone in the street. Most of the people in the area had no idea who she was, but this person, as it turned out, did. Through some divine prank, this person just so happened to be one of her old classmates; the very same boy she accidentally harmed all those years ago. He instantly recognized her and started causing a scene, screaming and hollering that there was a villain on the loose. This caused enough of a panic to alert the authorities.
By some miracle, she managed to avoid them, and they never got a good look at her, so the whole thing was eventually brushed off as a paranoid citizen overreacting to some sort of slight. But this small incident was finally pushed her over the breaking point. Clearly, the world didn't care about her dreams; it only wanted to view her as a villain. So that's what she'd become. Not that she had any idea of what she was doing, of course. But she was sick and tired of being treated like a villain when all she's ever done is try to help others. So she was done trying to help them.

QUIRK TECHNICAL LIMIT: As mentioned above, her hand drying out and cracking can make it hard for her to use her quirk, though there are other factors involved. In addition, she also can't use it if her hand becomes injured in a way that prevents her from being able to move it or requires it to be bandaged up. If there's any kind of open wound on her palm, it'll be less effective. In short, she has be very careful to not let her hands get in injured.
Simply wearing a glove will also block it, though she does that anyway since it allows her to interact with others without accidentally harming them. "The gloves coming off" is a common expression for when someone gets serious in a fight, and for her, it's very literal. Additionally, even if she makes direct contact, it doesn't have any affect on someone with either mechanical body parts (assuming that's the only place she touches them) or any sort of artificial skin.
Last but not least, she'd understandably have a lot of trouble against someone whose Quirk allows them to either nullify or ignore pain, since, as previously mentioned, it doesn't actually cause any physical damage to her target.

SUPER MOVE: SURGE OF AGONY > More of a desperation attack than a Super Move, but it's an effective one nonetheless. When backed into a corner, Sya can overclock her Quirk to send a wave of barely-visible energy from both of her hands that spreads out over a 10-foot radius around her. Anyone caught in this wave will experience the effects of her quirk throughout the entirety of their bodies. Though it only lasts for a few seconds, it can still be extremely debilitating due to how sudden and intense it is.
The drawback is that there's a rather harsh backlash from the burst of energy, which results in both of her hands and forearms to experience the same excruciating pain that her Quirk inflicts on others. As one can imagine, this also makes it extremely hard, if not impossible, to use her quirk again. This recoil effect lasts for a few minutes, at which point the pain will start fading.

COSTUME: While it might be a bit of a stretch to call it a costume, she does have one particular outfit she often defaults to wearing, if only because she doesn't really have anything else to wear. It consists of a large violet hoodie with a red section around the neck that is actually attached to the hoodie despite giving off the impression that it's a shirt underneath said hoodie, and baggy, pale green pants. There's usually a black tank-top under the hoodie. She did used to have an actual hero costume, but ditched it a long time ago in an effort to lay low after her failed debut as a hero landed her in so much trouble with the law.
Under the hoodie, she hides a belt lined with small knives with which she can use to fight; each knife is fitted with a durable non-metallic blade, allowing her to slip them past any form of metal detection. She usually carries around four at a time, and manages to keep a steady supply of them since they're relatively cheap/easy to to get a hold of.
EXPERTISE: Knife Proficiency; while she doesn't have much in the way of fighting abilities (at least not compared to something like a trained martial artist), she has learned how to fight rather effectively with a knife or dagger. She prefers to avoid using it to kill others (though she's not afraid to if her hand is forced), and instead uses it to try and rip into those pesky hero costumes and give her a patch of bare skin she can use her quirk on.Under the hoodie, she hides a belt lined with small knives with which she can use to fight; each knife is fitted with a durable non-metallic blade, allowing her to slip them past any form of metal detection.
